“And they were giving him attention because he had for a long time astonished them with his magic arts…. Even Simon himself believed; and after being baptized, he continued on with Philip, and as he observed signs and great miracles taking place, he was constantly amazed” (Acts 8:11, 13).
Simon had grown used to the circus. A big tent, long lines, the spot-light, lots of money, and magic. God needed to teach this new believer that the kingdom of God was not a ticket to another new show in town.
No more miracles on demand, and no more famous preachers in the spotlight. Jesus, and Jesus alone is who and what we’re about.
“He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything” (Col 1:18).
